Loot Hunter The Ultimate Treasure Hunting Guide!
V
2.0

Welcome to the free version of Loot Hunter!

This is the free version of the World of Warcraft Treasure Hunting Guide. It's almost the same as the paid version, but with some annoyances.

Free version restrictions:

- Sometimes when you change the level category, like from 30-40 to 40-50, you are required to complete a short survey, or enter a competition, whichever you prefer. If you don't want to give your personal email, give a secondary one instead. Don't worry. These will take a few clicks only and then you can stay on the current page as long as you want.

- There are ads. Clicking on them does not take you away from this site, so you don't have to complete another survey when you return here.

Paid version, without the above annoyances can be found here.

Check out the first few pages to see what the guide looks like before purchasing it, to make sure you like it.

Tip: If you have a printer, print out the pages you are interested in if you do not like participating in competitions or surveys but still plan to return here.

If you're getting errors, check that your Internet Security software is not blocking advertisements.

I created this product for you, so if you have any suggestions on how to improve your reading experience, be sure to let me know. If it's a good feature, I will add it in a upcoming version update!

Not sure what this guide is all about?

This guide is a small leveling + gold making guide to be enjoyed in small quantities. Best way to make use of this guide is to do normal questing and check all the rare spawn and treasure locations when nearby. It speeds your leveling considerably!

It works mainly for levels 5-80. Rares and chests in 80+ zones are too rare for them to have any significant effect on your experience bar, but they can fetch nice amounts of fast gold!

It was created for everyone who is tired of the same old questing or pugging instances and battlegrounds, and want to try something refreshing for a change in order to gain lots of experience and also get rich while at it.

Also if you have love for alts and want to only play toons with rested experience, this guide is a perfect fit for you.

Since level differences can be even 10 levels, if you ever bump into too hard monsters, you should check a bit lower level zone instead.

I want to level faster!

This guide is not a speed leveling guide. If you do not combine Treasure Hunting with questing, you will be focusing only on rare monster and treasure chest farming, which usually gain you 1-3 levels (Less at later levels) in 10-30 minutes and possibly 400-10,000g, depending on how lucky you are and where you are digging for treasure. Some zones have rare creatures that drop almost 100,000g worth of items! More info on that to be found in the 80-85 section.

After that it's recommended to do some quests until you can safely check out the next zones, or alternatively log off for a hour or two.

Experience and levels

Treasure Hunting is most effective for levels 5-80. The experience gains from rares and treasure chests are not that significant after level 70. Also, most of the rare monsters after level 60 are related to achievements, so you will not be the only one looking for them. There's also less zone choices at later levels so you will run into less and less treasure chests aswell.

Avoid these zones!

Blizzard was lazy when it comes to updating TBC content for Cataclysm, mainly the starting areas for Draenei and Blood Elves. These zones only contain Tattered or Battered Chests, which do NOT award experience when looted. The items you will find from these are also crap when compared to chests in other zones. These zones also have 0-1 rare creatures, so the trip to these places is a waste of time.

It's recommended that you do your treasure hunting in some other zone.

For this reason I will not list zones like Ghostlands and Bloodmyst Isle. I will however create maps of all starting zones, even if they contain nothing but junk.

Loot Hunting tips

How to use this guide!

You should not think of this as a leveling guide. That said, if you want to create a new toon just for this guide, you should NOT focus on treasure hunting alone. For example, first rare monsters and treasures you come across are guarded by level 6 ish monsters, so you can't tackle those with a level 1 toon.

Even if you manage to ninja 4 treasures and destroy 7 rares, you'd only gain 2-4 levels and that's not enough to enter the next zone, unless you plan on running around the world towards some other starting zone.

Make use of the zones!

Treasure chests and rare creatures do not have instant respawns. However, you do not need to stick to one zone only. As long as a creature or zone is at least "green" to you, you will gain experience there. Treasure chests award loot in every zone and at any level though.

For example, if you are level 50, you can get lots of exp in Badlands, Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes. That could gain you at least 10 rare kills and 7 treasure chests. That equals 17 quests done usually. If it's not enough, there's the other continent waiting!

There are ways to improve your experience gains!

  • RAF (Refer A Friend) bonus allows you to get 300% more experience from all gains, all the way to level 80.
  • Heirlooms increase your leveling speed considerably.
  • Addons listed below make the loot hunting a lot smoother, allowing you to gain exp even faster!

How to find more rare monsters and Treasure Chests!

If possible, do your treasure hunting when there aren't that many people online. Late nights or early mornings are the best time if you want to find the most loot.

What to do with the loot to make the most gold?

Green equipment:

Will it disenchant into valuable dust/essences? Use an addon like enchantrix to find out! If not, green level 6-76 equipment should be sold for no less than 10-50g each in the Auction House. Level 77-80 Cataclysm greenies should not be disenchanted under any circumstances. These can be sold for even 300-500g each, if they have good stats that is.

If the item looks better than your average item, or is part of a set, you might want to sell it in the Auction house for 300-600g.

Green trade goods/recipes:

These can be more complicated. You will find lots of them, and depending on your realm, these can make you either rich or very rich. There are items that are way more valuable than people would think. If you are unsure how valuable an item is, check the Valuable Loot list found in my gold making guide. If your item is not listed, leave a comment somewhere and I will either create a new post that has the item in, or let you know if it's valuable or not.

Blue equipment:

If they do not disenchant into Large Brilliant Shards, these should be auctioned always. I've found out blue quality items sell for 40-200g, depending on how rare it is. Cataclysm blues, however, can sell for even 600g.

There are more exceptions though. For example, in certain high level classic zones you will find Orbs of Deception inside Treasure Chests. These are extremely valuable! I've sold multiple orbs for even 10,000g each.

Epic equipment:

Even though it's epic, if it's under level 85, it's pretty much useless. Unless it looks exceptionally bad-ass, like Teebu's Blazing sword. Epics usually sell for 100-600g.

There are zones that are better than others, gold making wise!

Personally I've obtained the most gold from level 50-60 zones. Chests in those zones have a small chance of containing an Orb of Deception, which is extremely valuable on all realms.

Must have addons!

To make your Loot Hunting experience even more fun, there are a number of necessary addons available.

NPCSCAN

This addon alerts when a rare monster is nearby, allowing you to easily target the monster so you can see it on the minimap without having to look around. Currently it only has TBC, Wrath and Cataclysm high level rares. There is no support for 1-60 rares, but I will add a convertable NPCSCAN ID list for all rare creatures to this guide in a upcoming version update.

Gathermate 2

Gathermate records all objects on your map. Mining nodes, herbs, treasure chests and so on.

MapCoords

There are numerous addons that show you coordinates, but this is one of them. It makes the job a lot easier if you know your and your cursors location. I've included coordinates to all rare monsters and treasure chests.

Routes

Routes allow you to draw lines on the worldmap linking nodes together into an efficient farming route from existing databases. The route will be shown (by default) on the minimap and zone map as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

If a question you need answered is not listed here, use the email address found below.

1) What are the differences between all the Treasure Chests? (Silverbound, Sturdy, Maplewood)

There are no differences in the loot they contain. Only thing that affects the contents is the level of the zone. Some chests are just themed to fit their environment. For example, Dark Iron chests are located where dwarves are, or just fiery environments.

2) I didn't find a single treasure chest or rare even though I visited multiple zones!

Sometimes this happens. There's a few reasons I can think of:

  • You're not the only person in the zone(s). Especially level 70+ zones have this problem.
  • Treasure chests despawn after a random period.
  • Respawn times vary a lot. Sometimes it takes hours for chests to respawn.
  • There are a few zones where chests sometimes spawn in inaccessible locations.
  • Some zones have more chests than others. For example, I've never run into more than one Treasure Chest in Mulgore, yet I can find 5 treasure chests within 7 minutes while in Zangarmarsh.

3) What's the big X on some of the treasure maps?

The big X is just a simplified way to show a point of interest that has more than 2 chests almost next to each other. The map would get too messy if coordinates to each chest would be added in these cases. If you do not find a chest next to the big X, look around the place. These places usually have a treasure chest spawned. I'm still experimenting on how to let you know about those tight spots.
